GQ writer Julia Ioffe think President Trump has radicalized more people than ISIS. Ioffe on Jake Tapper’s CNN show on Monday said Trump has created legions of extremists in the U.S. with “winks and nods to these groups,” presumably referring to white nationalists. A fellow panelist called her comments “unconscionable,” but Ioffe persisted, saying that while ISIS has some 10,000 members, Trump has far more supporters who like him because of his hateful ideology. Ioffe later walked back the comments, sort of.
—QUOTABLE: “The way that he talks, the way that he allows these — the way he winks and nods to these groups. The way he says, I know I’m not supposed to say it, but I’m a nationalist. The way that he hems and haws when he has to condemn these people, gritting his teeth says, says fine, OK, I condemn this.” -Ioffe
