In a stunning reversal, Amazon announced on Wednesday it was scuttling plans to locate a new headquarters in New York City. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo blamed the state’s Democrat-controlled state senate for scaring the online retail giant. In a statement, Cuomo blamed politicians putting their narrow interests ahead of the good of the state.
MEANWHILE, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the failure of the deal. Although it would’ve brought 25,000 jobs to her district’s back door, AOC claimed the deal’s demise was a win for “everyday New Yorkers.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is coming to the defense of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, who is under intense fire for what many see as anti-Semitic tweets. Omar, a Democrat, said on Twitter that Republicans support Israel because they’ve been purchased by pro-Israel group AIPAC. She also tweeted a reference to “hook-nosed” Jews. But Ocasio-Cortez praised Omar, saying she’s “proud [Omar] raised the issue of lobbyist [money]” and claimed she’s “equally proud of her sensitivity to communities.” Omar’s comments were quickly repudiated by Dem leadership.
The Democrats’ Socialist caucus rolled out details about their “Green New Deal” on Thursday, and it’s grim. The plan, allegedly the brainchild of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, calls for a “massive transformation of our society”—including:
- Zero U.S. emissions within ten years
- Retrofitting or replacing every building in the country to comply with green energy mandates
- Build out new high speed rail to make air travel unnecessary (seriously)
- Mandate all jobs be unionized
- Ban nuclear energy
Not included in the plan’s details was any explanation of how the untold trillions of dollars it would cost would be paid for. Instead, it noted, “the question isn’t how will we pay for it, but what will we do with our new shared prosperity”.
Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was passed over for a spot on the House Climate Crisis Committee, but insists it wasn’t a snub. The Socialist from New York is alleged to be the mastermind behind the “Green New Deal,” but she wasn’t appointed to the committee that would deal with the issue. She claims she turned down on a offer to serve on the committee.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is enjoying her rockstar status, appearing this week on The Late Show. Colbert at one point asked her how many [f-words] she gives — but they bleeped him saying the actual word. She responded in stride that she indeed gives “zero.” This late night appearance comes on the heels of her declaration that the world will end in 12 years from global warming if action isn’t swiftly taken.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is apologizing – sort of – after appearing to threaten Donald Trump Jr. with Congressional subpoenas. Responding to a social media meme Trump, Jr. shared mocking socialism, the New York congresswoman and self-avowed socialist tweeted that it’s not a good idea to troll a body that would soon have the subpoena power. CNN host Anderson Cooper pointed out that the comment seems like an abuse of power.
It didn’t take long for House Democrats to scrap a plan that would make it harder to raise taxes on the middle class. At the cheering of the far left wing of the party, the incoming majority decided against a rule that would have required a three-fifths supermajority to pass any new tax hikes. Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had proposed a compromise, exempting tax hikes on the wealthiest 20 percent of Americans and corporations from the three-fifths threshold. In an early test of how strong the ultra-liberal progressive wing of the party will be, even that compromise died. Republicans pounced, saying Dem claims they don’t want to raise middle class taxes are just empty rhetoric.
—QUOTABLE: “It’s barely gotten any attention, but Nancy Pelosi just made it easier for House Dems to raise taxes on everyone…Not on the wealthy. Everyone. They’ve never been for the middle class – just more government.” -Tweet by Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel
ALSO—The face of the Democratic Socialists in the House, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, celebrated the failure of the rule to stop middle class tax hikes proposed by Nancy Pelosi.
—QUOTABLE: “When I first won, folks said we were too naive, inexperienced, and uninformed to be effective…Yet in our first weeks, we elevated Green New Deal to national urgency, secured 30 cosponsors on a Select Committee, and helped stop a bad tax rule. I’d say we’re off to a good start.” -Ocasio-Cortez tweet
MEANWHILE—House Democrats are excited for a swift return to pork barrel spending. Pork—also known as goodies and earmarks attached to bills to buy key congressional votes—was banned by the Republican-controlled House several years ago. But incoming Nancy Pelosi flack Steny Hoyer says he expects a sequel—sort of “The Earmark Strikes Back.” House Dems are hoping to find support for pork barrel spending among the incoming Republican minority.
—QUOTABLE: “To say that a member of Congress is unable to help his or her own district I think is incorrect…We are co-equal branches — that is our authority under the Constitution. We don’t have to go hat in hand to the president and say, please, will you spend money on this, that, or the other?” -Hoyer
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is taking heat for her latest stupid comment. In a tweet on Monday the newly elected socialist Congresswoman from New York accused White House Chief of Staff John Kelly of cowardice over a comment he made about another Democrat congresswoman who divulged a private conversation between President Trump and a gold star family. But top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway wasn’t having it. In an interview on Fox News, Conway reminded the country that Kelly is a decorated Marine veteran who lost his own son in battle—hardly a coward. Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez is just a clueless young putz, to paraphrase Conway.
—QUOTABLE: “This country owes him a debt of gratitude, not the nonsense that’s been spewed about him, even recently from the left and from this 29-year-old congresswoman who doesn’t seem to know much about anything when you ask her basic concepts about the economy, the Middle East, military funding — really embarrassing.” -Conway
MEANWHILE—Ocasio-Cortez also stands by her claim that she has Jewish ancestry. She claimed that because there were Sephardi Jews who immigrated to Puerto Rico, that means she can lay claim to an entirely new ancestry. “Culture isn’t DNA,” she tweeted, saying to be Puerto Rican is to be a combination of many ancestries and backgrounds (sounds like, boy I dunno, a melting pot?). So this isn’t “cultural appropriation” because…why?
The Washington Post gave Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez the dubious “Four Pinocchios” award for her latest claims about Pentagon funding and her “Medicare for All” scheme. The newly elected Democratic Socialist member of the House claimed Monday in a tweet that unaccounted for Defense Department funding could be used to pay for the Bernie Sanders-inspired socialist healthcare plan, which was pegged at a cost of $32 trillion over ten years. But according to a 17-year Pentagon audit, there were $21 trillion of difficult to explain spending, the result of accounting issues. The audit does not mean there is a giant pot of cash sitting around somewhere, and Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t give thought to basic accounting, the Washington Post concluded. Pentagon spokesman Christopher Sherwood added that the DOD spending hasn’t even been appropriated $21 trillion in its entire existence, making her claim completely impossible.
—QUOTABLE: “Ocasio-Cortez is not the first Twitter user to mangle information from a news report. But it’s unconvincing to try to pass this off as a rhetorical point being misread. She cited the $21 trillion figure and said ‘66% of Medicare for All could have been funded already by the Pentagon…That’s a direct comparison. It’s badly flawed. The same article she referenced on Twitter would have set her straight. The tweet is still up, probably causing confusion. So we will award Four Pinocchios to Ocasio-Cortez.” -Washington Post
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Lindsey Graham are in a spat over AOC’s comments comparing caravan migrants to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. Graham replied to the inane comment that she should tour the Holocaust Museum in D.C. to get a sense of why the two aren’t the same. And on Monday, the Democratic Socialist replied by saying authoritarianism and violence are a “growing force” and not isolated to the past. She has suggested case workers be used to solve the border problem instead of armed troops.
—QUOTABLE: “…the point of such a treasured museum is to bring its lessons to present day…This administration has jailed children and violated human rights. Perhaps we should stop pretending that authoritarianism + violence is a historical event instead of a growing force.” -AOC
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday compared the migrant caravan to Jews fleeing the Holocaust, denouncing President Trump’s order that migrants who bypass the legal process for entering the country not be granted asylum. Asking for refugee status and asylum “isn’t a crime,” she tweeted. She made the comment as the migrants were making a run at the border in an effort to storm the gate, throwing rocks and bottles at U.S. border agents.
—QUOTABLE: “Asking to be considered a refugee & applying for status isn’t a crime…It wasn’t for Jewish families fleeing Germany. It wasn’t for targeted families fleeing Rwanda. It wasn’t for communities fleeing war-torn Syria. And it isn’t for those fleeing violence in Central America.” -AOC
MEANWHILE—Sen. Lindsey Graham isn’t having any of it. In a Twitter reply, the South Carolina Republican suggested Ocasio-Cortez takes tour of the Holocaust Museum in D.C. “Might help her better understand the differences between the Holocaust and the caravan in Tijuana,” he wrote. “Americans will not be played for fools.”
ALSO—Despite the insistence of liberals, the majority of migrants arrested as they tried to illegally cross the border Sunday are adult men, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials. 42 migrants were arrested after clashes with border officials—just 8 were females. And according to NBC the majority of migrants camped out in Tijuana are men seeking work, not women and children fleeing persecution.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez further cemented her dubious status as a never-ending butt of jokes. In a video posted Sunday, the newly minted New York congresswoman and self-described Democratic Socialist said there are “three chambers of Congress,” then corrected herself by saying there are “three chambers of government.” Seems she meant branches, but the bar isn’t that high for members of Congress. But instead of reading a civics book, she lashed out at critics on—where else—Twitter. Instead of picking apart her words, her opponents should just admit they want to take away healthcare from people, she said.
—QUOTABLE: “If we work our butts off to make sure that we take back all three chambers of Congress — Uh, rather, all three chambers of government: the presidency, the Senate, and the House.” -Ocasio-Cortez
—QUOTABLE: “Maybe instead of Republicans drooling over every minute of footage of me in slow-mo, waiting to chop up word slips that I correct in real-tomd [SIC], they actually step up enough to make the argument they want to make: that they don’t believe people deserve a right to healthcare.” -Ocasio-Cortez
Once an activist, always an activist. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is about to take her seat on Congress, showed up for a global warming protest outside Nancy Pelosi’s office. The New York City rep-elect, who bills herself as a Democratic Socialist, joined the sit-down protest calling for more action on climate change, offering words of encouragement and high fives to the throng of lefties. She insisted that there are precious few years left to implement a “Green New Deal” before it’s too late to save the planet from a future of hell, fire, and brimstone.
—QUOTABLE: “I just want to let you all know how proud I am of each and every single one of you for putting yourselves and your bodies and everything on the line to make sure that we save our planet, our generation, and our future.” -Ocasio-Cortez to the protesters
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is calling for the elimination of the electoral college. The 28 year old candidate for a congressional seat in New York declared over the weekend the electoral college is a racist relic of the past and has to go. The avowed “Democratic Socialist” was commenting on a tweet by a writer for GQ magazine, who was complaining that the last two Republican presidents lost the popular vote but have been able to appoint four justices to the Supreme Court.
—QUOTABLE: “It is well past time we eliminate the Electoral College, a shadow of slavery’s power on America today that undermines our nation as a democratic republic.” -Ocasio-Cortez
Barack Obama all but made it official: he’s a socialist. Well at least he endorsed one. The failed former president on Monday endorsed avowed Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in her bid for a deep blue New York congressional district. Ocasio-Cortez came to fame when she shocked politics by knocking off deeply entrenched Democrat Joe Crowley, then went on to make a series of blunders that turned her into a punchline. Obama’s endorsement is hardly bold—the district she’s running for is hardcore Dem and her ideas, including abolishing ICE and having government take over all of health care, are gaining traction on the left.
Is socialism on the upswing or just a fad? If the latest out of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Michael Moore is any hint, the lurch leftward is already running on fumes. At a campaign stop on Saturday, Ocasio-Cortez, the self-described Democratic Socialist attracted only a small crowd that gathered around the candidate a couple people deep, according to a Twitter video. That vid did get 98,000 views. It may have done better than Moore’s latest movie, which is shaping up to be a major bomb. The flick, Fahrenheit 11/9, is a hair on fire screed about President Trump’s election. It is headed to an eighth place finish, earning just $3 million—well short of expectations.
