The Hit List: March 14, 2019

  1. Beto O’Rourke graces the latest issue of Vanity Fair. He’s expected to make the formal announcement today, KTSM El Paso reports.
  2. President Trump has ordered the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9. The U.S. was the last country to make such an order. Trump says he made the order in light of “new evidence” and after talking with FAA administrators and transportation secretary Elaine Chao.
  3. Facebook was down and glitchy for much of the day yesterday. Also affected were Instagram and Whatsapp — owned by Facebook. While working on a solution, facebook reps went to Twitter, of all places, to announce they’re confident it’s not a malicious attack, but are working on looking for the root cause.
  4. The Mortgage Bankers Association says the average mortgage application is $354,500 – a record high.
  5. A “Bomb Cyclone” has crippled Colorado’s infrastructure and stranded drivers. The phenomenon happens when huge winds whip up snow already on the ground, as well as new snowfall. In this case, winds exceeding 100 miles per hour have left drivers on the road as businesses and schools are also closing. The governor has declared a state of emergency.
  6. Four children have been diagnosed with cancer in as many years at a Sacramento-area high school, and parents blame a cell tower right next to the school. Doctors say the tumor on the most recent victim is purely environmental. For their part, the district say the environment is up to all standards — but they get $2,000 a month for having the tower on their property.
  7. Researchers have found that 1,200 species of animals could become extinct if their habitats are destroyed and not conserved. The animals include birds, mammals, and amphibians. The threatened animals are primarily in Southeast Asia and Northern South America.
  8. A gang of chickens on a French farm killed a fox that tried to infiltrate its coop. The fox entered a one-way door, and couldn’t escape, when a pack of hens pecked it to death. There are 6,000 in the coop. The fox had bites and cuts across its neck and body. No word how many chickens were involved in this brutal application of Castle Doctrine.
  9. The US Navy is expanding its version of a drone fleet. It’s looking to buy 10 unmanned ships over the next five years. Ships like these can be up to 300 feet long, don’t have crew, and function as both recon and warships. It’s all in an effort to keep Russia’s and China’s growing navy fleets at bay.
  10. More than 10.2 million American households are worth $1 million – $5 million, up 2.5% from 2o17. That now means there are more millionaires in America than there are people in “socialist-paradise” Sweden.
